Becoming an Affiliate

Becoming part of an affiliate program is a way that you can increase the success and profits of your Web site. Before you take part in an affiliate program, you need to decide what role you want to play in the process: the affiliate, the merchant Web site that affiliates, or a combination of both. If you have an online business Web site, you’ll most likely want to have affiliates that are going to send potential customers to your site and increase the success and profits of your online or brick-and-mortar business. Those people who have a small Web site that offers content rather than sales may want to be an affiliate for a few business Web sites. The bottom line is that you need to decide how your Web site will best benefit and then take the steps to becoming an affiliate, having an affiliate, or being a little of both.

The steps you need to take to be an affiliate for other Web sites are easy to implement. All you need to do is find an affiliate program network site on the Internet and join by filling out a simple application form that gathers the following information: 1) information that is personal, such as your name, address, and the type of payment plan that you prefer, including payment address, and 2) information about your Web site, such as your Web address (URL), the name of your Web site, and a description of your Web site. Once you’ve filled out the information form, you’ll be asked to sign what is called a “service agreement” so that both you and the affiliate network are clear about the terms and conditions.

You may have to wait a few days to find out if your application to become an affiliate has been approved, at which time you can choose the type of affiliate programs that appeal to you the most and in which you would like to take part (most merchants have only one option). After you’ve chosen a few affiliate programs, it will be time for the “merchants” to view your Web site to see if they want to use you as an affiliate. Once you’ve been approved, the affiliate program network will help you in hosting the links and banner ads on your Web site that correspond with your chosen affiliate program. At this time you may be asked to work out the finer details of the payment side of things, such as which action you’re going to be paid for and how much, such as pay-per-click, pay-per-lead, or pay-per-sale; however, this is typically set in advance.

Most affiliate programs will only pay you once a certain minimum amount of earnings has been reached because the profit that you make as an affiliate doesn’t amount to thousands. This is so that the affiliate network doesn’t send out small amounts of money that add up to a small total. Additionally, most affiliates do not honor sales for purchases that you make through your own affiliate link. After you’ve been set up as an affiliate and understand for which actions you’re being paid and how much, you can concentrate on the content and purpose of your Web site.
