Google in China: A Sell Out or Step Up?

Google has started to get serious about one of the fastest growing Internet markets in the world: China. They have announced a partnership with one of China’s largest news, email, entertainment provider and search engines, Sina, to provide content easier to Chinese Internet users. The question that is on everybody’s mind is why can’t Google get in the market all by itself?
Â

Google has pretty much taken over the Internet as far as the western world is concerned, but because of cultural differences, it has had a hard time getting a foot in the door in China. Chinese Internet users prefer using exclusively Chinese websites and the set up of these sites it totally different from Google’s layout.¼br /> Â

When you go to Google’s homepage, the page is surprisingly blank. Unless you want to jump to another Google feature, you are going to have to type something into the search box. Sina (and other Chinese websites) on the other hand are packed with links, videos, advertisements photos and other information that changes all the time (looking more like Yahoo, which is more popular in China, than Google). You can probably find something that is interesting on this page to read (if you can read Chinese).
Â

So now that Google is coming to China in a big way how will this change the company? The government in China has a huge firewall in place that blocks searches for terms like “Tiananmen Square Massacre” or “Falun Gong” a Chinese religious group. There is chatter going around that Google is selling its soul by working together with a Chinese company, and that its company policies of “democracy on the web” and “you can make money without doing evil”.  Is Google going back on these things or are they just trying to get their foot in the market that they haven’t been able to do by themselves?Â

With Google opening the Chinese market, many small and mid-sized businesses are interested in opening their client base to include China and are looking for a search engine optimization firm like White Hat Marketing, LLC to ensure they properly optimize their websites and marketing campaigns.
