It’s really a little bit spooky, if you ask me, how Google researches, finds, convicts, and executes those that sell or buy paid links that pass PageRank.
‘Passing PageRank’ is linking to Mr. X’s site for $50 from my site, which has a very high PageRank. Since link backs are so important, Mr. X’s site will see a boost in his own PageRank and will benefit in many ways. He does this because I did not put a ‘nofollow’ in the ‘rel=’ attribute of the link, which Google says we should if its a paid post or advertisement.
So, if you were considering offering up some cold hard cash for a good link here or there, think about it again. Google actually asks people to report this practice and goes looking on its own.
What happens if you’re caught (or accused and found guilty)?
Kiss your PageRank goodbye, if you’re lucky, and if you’re really unlucky you might just disappear from Google for awhile, or forever… like you never even existed!
