Google Tips: Don’t Go Link Crazy!

Link building and link exchanges are an important and useful step in optimizing you website for Google searchers. But there is such a thing as going too far.

Here’s an interesting note in a document I’m sure not many people read.

Keep the links on a given page to a reasonable number (fewer than 100).

Where’s that from?

The Webmaster Guidelines as published by Google. Yeah, they publish their own almost-SEO Guide, but not many people pay any attention to it.

This is a brief document that only lists a few important, if general, points. One of which is the one quoted above.

Link Exchanges

It’s great to exchange link backs with other bloggers or related websites, but you better know when enough is enough. Any more than 100 outbound links in a single page is going to get the Google webcrawler’s attention–in a bad way.

Try to keep the number of links on a page below 50 unless you have a good reason for listing more (which I don’t think you do). This will keep you in Google’s good graces and also help to make sure you’re not going link crazy.
