Google Tips: Image Search

Google Image Search is a powerful way to attract traffic to your website, and best of all your competition probably isn’t doing anything to compete against you in this field.

Image Search optimization is very similar to standard copy and web optimization, though it has its unique tags and tips. Follow this simple guide and get your products and content images ranking high in the image search and open up a new channel of traffic.

  • IMG ALT Attribute - The ALT attirbute in the image tag should contain a few descriptive keywords that tell the Google crawler what your image is about. Don’t over do it. Keep it short, to the point, and not too KW rich.
  • Image Captions - These work in tandem with your ALT attribute tag. Place a small descriptive caption above, below, or near the image. Use this caption to be a bit more descriptive with some keywords, but make the text flow naturally. Again, don’t over do it.
  • Use Images in your Content - Whether an article, blog post, or press release, include images. When distributing the press release or article for syndication, include a link back to an image on your own server that the service can include with the syndicated copy. This makes it more attractive to readers, and also lets you plug your own URL and keywords in to content off and on your website.
  • File Name - Your image file name should be short, descriptive, and include a keyword(s). Like all other forms of SEO, don’t over do it! Mentioning keywords in natural context 2 to 4 times is enough for the search crawler to get the idea. Once you start saturating, it becomes leery that your content is spammy and contains little real content of value.
