Google Tips: Search Result Descriptions

Google does not use your meta description in its search results pages. Instead, it looks for the keywords in the search string, and displays the text surrounding these keywords.

I don’t think I need to say much about how important that text can be — it will and does make the difference between a click and a pass, working in tandem with your page title.

To make the most of our appearance on search results, we need to make sure that the text appearing in our search result says what we want it to.

But how do we do that?

Easily — make sure the first appearance of a set of keywords that page is targeted for is in a sentence that you’d want as your page description in the results.

If your keywords are “red tomatoes” and you sell organic red tomatoes, a particular product page might aim to have “red tomatoes” appear in a line such as “Fresh organic red tomatoes for a great price!”

Make the text work and count and it will make a difference.
