High Gas Prices Might Drive eCommerce Growth

Vinton Cerf, a Google Executive, speculated that soaring gas prices might actually help to ‘fuel’ online growth (pun intended).

Although I’m not happy with increased oil prices, the Internet (industry) may actually benefit from that as people turn to it as an aid to improve their efficiency … We may turn increasingly to video conferencing or other kinds of electronic media in order to avoid having to travel.

With reports surfacing in major news outlets that for the first time since the 90s Americans are cutting back on driving in what some speculate to be the beginning of a continued trend, the internet and ecommerce offers thrifty consumers a way to save money.

Everything from groceries to new houses can be bough online, and without stopping by the gas station to fill up.

While the price of gas is hard to view in a positive light, online businesses and advertisers might have a silver lining to exploit in the end.
