Word-of-mouth advertising is the most time honored form of advertising available, and very effective if used correctly. Despite the many other forms of advertising available today, you can still utilize these skills in the online world by participating in forums and discussing your business and products. The idea is to advertise without being intrusive.
Start by becoming a respected member of the online community you are targeting. The more people who like you, and the more you participate in the forum, the more effective your advertising will be. Make sure you are aware of the rules, and the advertising you have in mind isn’t considered SPAM.Â
You can market your product or business by posting relevant information from your site with a link, or links to articles that pertain to the discussion. Another effective method is to simply place a link in your signature - this is very common.  In this way, the more you participate, the more your link will be seen, and you don’t have to constantly think of ways to softly plug your business without becoming annoying to other members.
The most important thing is to ensure all your comments are constructive and you do not become perceived by other members as there only to SPAM the site. This could result in your eviction, and will not help you at all. Use forums as a way of networking, and communicate with other members of the internet community rather than try to sell to them.Â
