Microsoft Lays Out Plans to Catch Google

Microsoft laid out its strategy for catching up with search giant Google at the Search Engines Strategies Conference and Expo in San Jose tuesday.

Satya Nadella, Senior VP of Search and Advertising at Microsoft, spoke about big investments and better technology to help shoot Microsoft up in the battle.

It’s rumored that the major software firms acquisition of Powerset, a San Francisco based natural-language software developer, will be the key in their approach.

According to a Microsoft blog post on July 21 after the Powerset buy was announced, “search engines today primarily match words in a search to words on a Web page. We can solve these problems by working to understand the intent behind each search and the concepts and meaning embedded in a Web page. Doing so, we can innovate in the quality of the search results, in the flexibility with which searchers can phrase their queries, and in the search user experience.”

Bringing a more intuitive and accurate approach to searches, which most users spend up to 30 minutes trying to find the right result, could mean a big success for Microsoft.
