Online Businesses Become More Attractive in Tight Economy

A tough economy has led many Americans to look for creative ways to make ends meet.  Stay-at-home parents and caretakers, students and full-time workers are all looking for ways to increase income while keeping a realistic approach to the fact that even when times are tough there are only 24 hours in a day.

Online opportunities that allow people to work from anywhere they have a computer and Internet connection have become more attractive then ever before.  Many online businesses look for virtual workers for customer service, data entry, copy writing, graphic design, accounting and more.

White Hat Marketing was born in 2001 (then called Set Sites High) with a core belief that there was an amazing pool of talented men and women who were looking for opportunities to earn an income without commuting to an office.  Our company grew with the help of stay-at-home mothers, stay-at-home caretakers and talented professionals looking to supplement their income with a second (and sometimes third) source of income.   Over the last 8 to 12 months we have seen an increase in inquiries by very talented men and women about opportunities within our company.

After speaking with colleagues as well as clients, I have learned that this is true in many markets.  Businesses are being approached by people looking for opportunities to increase their income from the comfort of their own homes or offices.  The result has been an increase in overall quality of work and a decrease in the cost to get the work done.

In addition to people looking for the opportunities stated above, many are also looking into starting home-based, online businesses.  Many creative and talented are putting there talents to work and are opening these businesses.  Though the vast majority are destined to fail because of a lack of start-up capital, many will succeed.  Savvy online entrepreneurs are spending more on marketing and less on cutting edge technology on their sites.  Whether they are selling hand-crafted jewelry, gift baskets, professional services, or just about anything else you can think of online businesses are opening every day as the Internet continues to be seen as the most viable way to start a new venture.

I have the good fortune of speaking to many truly brilliant men and women with wonderful business ideals and goals.  I also sometimes get the misfortune of having to smack someone with a dose of reality when they present ideas that are simply not viable.  Later in the week I will be addressing this very topic - how does an company keep their ethics in a tightening economy and narrowing advertising and marketing budgets.

When the economy settles down, and it certainly will, one positive that will come from this crisis is greater creativity, a more diverse online marketplace and an amazing talent pool that sees the benefits to working in the virtual business world.  I, for one, am excited to see the entrepreneurial spirit alive and well and even more talented people entering the arena, especially when I get to add them to the White Hat Marketing team.
