Part Five: Keep the traffic coming

Keep Traffic Coming

You built a website, wrote a great 5 article series focused on your region of expertise, and listed your properties. After you registered the site in Google and Yahoo you started seeing traffic, and had the first taste of success. But the game’s not over.

Unlike other forms of advertising and marketing, a website is not a one-time pop. It is not an ad in a newspaper, a poster on a bus, or even a television commercial. These mediums allow for a one time investment and then they are executed, no further work required.

That’s not how websites work.

Website marketing requires that traffic continue to stream in, and if you create a one-off site then leave it alone, it will go stale and be lost in the abyss of the world wide web. Remember that ‘brochure’ site you used to have and how nothing every happened with it? Precisely my point.

So how do we keep the traffic flowing?

Keep Creating

You need to keep your website fresh, and that means publishing new articles, blog posts, properties and other content on a regular basis (at least once a week). You don’t have to necessarily write indepth articles like that awesome 5-part series you did to launch, but writing up a few relevant, interesting pieces once a week is always a good idea.

SEO (it’s important)

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. Optimizing your site for search engines means you rank better on Google, Yahoo, and other web crawlers. There is a lot that goes into this, including selecting intelligent and relevant “Key Words”, and making sure all of your content mentions them naturally and regularly. The format of your website’s code, getting other sites to link back to you, and regular directory submission can also be added to this list.

When your site is SEO’d to the max, you’re traffic increases. People can find you more easily when they search, and when this is done correctly, all of your incoming traffic is looking for exactly what you offer. And we all know that selling to interested buyers is easier than people who arrive to your site by mistake!

Do I have to do all that myself?!

No, you don’t, but of course you can. Things like writing good content and keeping your listings updated are not taxing, and require the skills that you already have. If you’re uncomfortable with the SEO stuff, there are professionals that can help you with that.
