Ranking Well On Google: Forget the META Tags

In the good old days, we used to jam millions of keywords into our meta tags to show up on search engines. Then the web grew up.

Google really doesn’t care about your meta tags. In their mind, visitors can’t see them, and they are very likely to be abused by webmasters that are (shock) trying to rank high.

Makes sense.

I’ve never liked meta tags anyway, but what does this mean for you? It means it’s one less piece of the puzzle to waste your time on. Instead, pay closer attention to title tags, h1 tags and the density of keywords in your copy.

Here’s a quick check list.

  • Title Tag: 35-40 Characters with 1+ Keyword(s)
  • H1 Tag: Use it ONCE on a page, with important short phrase within, 1+ Keywords and descriptive
  • Density of Keywords: Don’t go crazy here. Mentioning your keyword phrase a handful of times (2-4) in a short piece is plenty. Make sure other secondary keywords are in there and that the HTML is formated properly.
