SEO Tips: Use Static URLs

The default settings on several free CMS platforms (Joomla!, Wordpress, etc) leave you with non-human URLs for your content pages. This is limiting your SEO power!

Google, Yahoo, and other web indexers look at the URL of a page when ranking it. If keywords show up in that URL that are part of the search string, the engines deem the content more relevant. If the keywords are also found in the TITLE tags, as outlined in a previous post, you’re even more relevant, which means more traffic.

Usually you can change the settings within these CMS software so that the static URL of a blog entry or content page can use the keywords you’d like. The new Wordpress 2.5 version has this feature built write into the composition.

This is what changing the static display of your URL will look like:

“How to Make Pasta” used to be at: http://www.yoursite.com/entries/0098832.html

“How to Make Pasta” with a static, human-friendly url becomes: http://www.yoursite.com/entries/how-to-make-pasta.html.

Look into how to change your CMS settings or contact your web developer/designer and make sure your system is optimized for your content.
