Title Keyword Density: Which Search Engine Are You Targeting?

Title tags are important, and having the right string of keywords is essential to making yourself visible on search engines. Depending on which search engine you’re aiming to dominate, you might want to adjust your strategy.

MSN or Live.com usually rewards very consistent keyword density. In other words, if your title tag matches the search query exactly, you’re likely to rise to the top 10.

On the other hand, search giant Google is leary of 100% density. This is because of Google’s attempts to fight spam bot websites that load their content with keywords but offer no real content.

If it’s important, do it twice

If you have a product or a keyword that is very important to you, consider creating two seperately optimized pages for the same item. One optimized with titles and content at a high keyword density for MSN/Live.com, and another with a more moderate density for Google.

Ways to make your title’s less-than 100% optimized for Google is to throw in some 2nd-tier keywords in the title tags, thus diminishing the density while still utilizing its important placement in the algorithm to gain more traffic.
