The WSJ Law Blog Lawyer of the Year… Is a Student?

Every year, readers of the Wall Street Journal are asked to nominate the most newsworthy lawyer of the year.  Nominees for this year included former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, Pakistan’s Chief Justice Chaudhry, and Roy Pearson of The Great American Pants Suit. However, the most surprising nominee that came from WSJ readers this year was not a “real” person at all - he or she is an internet entity known as “Loyola 2L.”

Loyola 2L was not only nominated for The Law Blog Lawyer of the Year they, “won in a landslide.”  The reason for Loyola 2L’s popularity is not entirely understood, but we do know that he or she is very prominent in internet forums commenting about job prospects (or lack thereof) for graduates of students from nonelite law schools.

What makes this story so amazing is that L2L (as Loyola 2L is affectionately known), does not maintain a website, is not a blogger, nor does this person own a business. He or she has managed to create the L2L brand name simply through dedicated forum postings.  The power of the internet is building every day, and every firm can learn a lesson from L2L, who was recognized in the WSJ Law Blog as “Lawyer of the Year” even though he or she hasn’t even reached full-fledged lawyer status as a student of Loyola Law School.
