Yahoo Invites 3rd Parties to Help Build Search Power

In an attempt to wrest some of the search power of Google, Yahoo! will open its platform to 3rd party developers in its BOSS system.

BOSS, or Build your Own Search Service, will allow developers to use the existing databases and structures of Yahoo’s search, something that 3rd party developers would pay around $300 million to build on their own, Yahoo estimated.

The idea is that by opening up to 3rd parties, Yahoo! will get a little slice of running its advertisements on the search services spawned. A collective minority, in the model, would rival Google’s dominance, which currently enjoys over 60% of internet searches to Yahoo!’s 20%.
